Spectacular Betting
The Manawatu Racing Club had spectacular betting figures to show for its attractive programme of racing at Awapuni on Saturday. The total of £222,336 10s invested through the T.A.B. is a record for a club other than a metropolitan club and was nearly £16,000 higher than the T.A.B. figure for the
second day of the Wellington autumn meeting a fortnight earlier.
It was also nearly double the off-course investments for the corresponding day at last year’s Manawatu meeting.
On-course betting was £98,001, another substantial increase.
Palisade and Terrific,
which were regarded beforehand as likely to dominate the finish of the Awapuni Gold Cup, carried betting greater than some small South Island clubs would handle oncourse on a whole day’s racing. Of the £30,614 10s bet on the race, Terrific carried £11,797 and Palisade £7259—a total of £19,056.
