TEACHING THE THREE R’S
No Need Seen For More Time
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 27.
A remit to have extra subjects reduced and more time spent on the three r’s was defeated at the national conference of the Federation of School Committees in Lower Hutt yesterday. The remit was moved by the Invercargill and district association in view of “widespread complaints both from employers and secondary school teachers concerning the lack of knowledge of the three r’s.”
Mrs M. A. E. Rae (Canterbury) said the remit was “utter nonsense.” She said there was no statistical proof that standards of 20 years ago did not still apply. If there were more children at present of a lower educational standard than in the past, that was simply because there were more going to school.
