Sydenham Knock-Out Champion, Too

Sydenham added the senior A knock-out cricket competition to its senior championship when it beat High School Old Boys, by 142 runs, on Saturday . The day’s matches brought to an end the Canterbury Cricket Association’s senior competitions for the 1965-66 season.

Rapid scoring by the Sydenham and Riccarton sides, and the fall of 16 wickets for 155 runs in the EastShirley and Old Collegians match, were the features of the day’s play. K. Priest and P. A. Thomas, the usual Sydenham tail-end batsmen, opened the innings and gave their side a start of 62. This paved the way for some whirlwind batting by K. Thomson and I. R. Hartland. This pair added 145 runs in slightly more than 40 minutes before Thomson was run out. Hartland went on and was unlucky to be left on 99 not out when his side’s batting time ran out. Sydenham scored 281 for five. Old Boys made a shocking start and lost its first five wickets for 34. Then B. G. Hadlee was joined by M. J. Hadlee and the score was taken to 139 in the finish. Only three players reached double figures for Old Boys: B. G., M. J. and D. R. Hadlee. Scores: Sydenham 281/5 (Priest 54, Thomson 74, Hartland 99 not out), Old Boys 139 (B. G. Hadlee 50, M. J. Hadlee 45, D. R. Hadlee 25; P. A. Thomas 3/36). West Struggles An eighth wicket partnership of 46 between A. R. G. Byrne and I. D. Hounsell rescued West-Christchurch when it was struggling to overcome a modest first innings total by Lancaster Park. Only a hard-hitting 56 by R. M. Gearry gave the Park respectability against an accurate West attack. A. G. Rose, B. Andrews and B. C. Irving all looked comfortable but got out when well settled. Lancaster Park 150 (Gearry 56,

Irving 21; Hounsell 3/44), WestUniversity 165/7 (Sharp 31, Garrod 63, Hounsell 29 not out). Stead Attractive Riccarton gained a convincing victory against St. Albans after its early batsmen had provided some sparkling batting. G. R. McAulay and C. L. Broad began well and D. W. Stead joined in later with some crisp driving. P. A. Stubbings and G. T. Barrett also had a fruitful partnership ajid when time ended, Riccarton had scored 250 for nine. Although six players reached double figures for St. Albans, only J. W. Burtt passed 20 against the bowling of nine members of the Riccarton side.

Riccarton 250/9 (Broad 47, Stead 65, Stubbings 30, Barrett 42 not out; Burtt 3/86), St. Albans 137 (Burtt 29; F. M. Madrussen 3/38).

Wickets Tumble Only 92 minutes after beginning its innings, East-Shirley was fielding in its match against Old Collegians. The side was all out for 75, and only three players reached double figures against some good bowling by J. H. M. Dawson and N. G. Clarke. However, Old Collegians did little better and at lunch had lost three wickets for 16. Nothing dismayed, the players went for their shots on resuming and took the team to a four-wicket victory. The young East-Shirley pace bowler, G. V. D. Pulley, captured all six wickets to fall and al) the Collegian batsmen were uncomfortable against him.

East-Shirley 75 (Dawson 3/11, Clarfke 4/27), Old Collegians 79/6 (S. J. Hunt 29; Pulley (6/30).
