MOGAMBO PLEASES

Mogambo, a form runner in the Coldstream Handicap at Ashburton on Monday, sprinted fast 30ft out on the course proper at Riccarton yesterday.

With his race rider, M. McCann up, Mogambo ran six furlongs in imin 18 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. Having run second to Sabell at Motukarara at his last start. Mogambo is a lightweight form runner in the second leg of the Ashburton T.A.B. double.

Barcape was one of the most Impressive over seven furlongs. Ridden by the lightweight, A. H. Eastwood, he sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 30 3-ssec to beat Omasong (E. G. Low) by a length, and We Wood (G. Gullery) by several lengths. Barcape ran the last halfmile in 51 3-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 39sec. Even Chance (Low) worked up to speed going to the six furlongs, and sprinted from there in Imin 21 3-ssec. Anasiwa (M. King) joined in for the last half-mile, run in 52sec.

Even Chance did not appear to be very free in his action early in the gallop, but was moving well at the end.

Even Chance will run against the sprinters at Ashburton, and probably will be stepped up to middle distances in his Easter racing at Riccarton. He looked very promising last autumn. We’ll Find Out (M. McCann) was shading Aoudo (W. H. Beck) ending seven furlongs in Imin 31 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 53sec. Messmaid (G. W. Mein) and Charlborough (R. B. Taggart) took Imin 49 2-ssec for their mile after a fairly leisurely start. They stayed on terms to the end, quickening for the last half-mile in 53 l-ssec. Early Dawn ran seven furlongs in Imin 32 3-ssec, and the last half-mile in 51 2-ssec. Fast Sprint The stablemates, Faraday (G. W. Mein) and Blue Seas (C. T. Wilson) recorded one of the fastest half-miles on the course proper. They finished a good gallop on terms in 50 4-ssec. Approval

(W. Jackson) recorded 53sec; and Corsica (C. T. Wilson) took 52 2-ssee.

The apprentice, B. Edens, had an eventful ride on Kalimera after going out for a six-furlong trial with Seminole (Tucker). Kalimera’s saddle started to slip beneath her three furlongs out, but the stablemates ran right through the straight to finish their last half-mile in 51 2-ssec.

Passing the post Edens had a precarious perch, and unable to clear a foot from one of the irons to allow him to fall to the ground. But he managed to “bail out” when the saddle slipped further after he reached the back straight.

Good Trial Two of the more impressive trialists on the plough were Prince Callan (P. Ryall) and Tsunami (G. Gullery). They dashed over seven furlongs in Imin 30 3-ssec, and the maiden Tsunami did well to stay on terms with an open-class performer after taking the outside running. They ran the last half-mile in 52 l-ssec and the final three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. Hardly less impressive was Gee Jay, which was shading Research (D. N. Hadfield) after running five furlongs in Imin 4 2-ssec, the last halfmile in 49 4-ssec and the final three furlongs in 37 3-ssec. The apprentice, R. Murphy, rode Gee Jay in his gallop, but Hadfield will be his race rider on Monday. Flying Saucer (Mein), another comparative newcomer to the Welton team, led Gold Find (A. Swanson) by a length after running five furlongs in Imin 4 4-ssec, the final four in 50 3-ssec. Not Hurried

The stablemates, Pharasal <A. J. Stokes) and Time and Tide (B. Collins) sprinted five furlongs easily in Imin 6 2-ssec, the last four in 52sec. They should be solid campaigners for J. C. Tomkinson’s stable in their Easter racing at Riccarton. Pharasal, winner of his last four races, probably will make his open-class debut in the Great Easter Handicap. Summer Lad (Moir) recorded Imin 19 l-ssec for six

furlongs and 52 4-ssec for the last half-mile.

General Gilbert (J. Kerkvliet) ran easily from the seven furlongs in Imin 37 4-ssec, the final three in 40 3-ssec.

Knight of York (F. H. Skelton) was not asked for much —a half-mile in 53 3-ssec. He should be one of the improvers in the high-weight field at Ashburton.
