KENDALL WILL MISS TRIALS
For various reasons, no senior pursuit riders will be on trial in the individual event in the final Empire Games track cycling trials at Auckland on April 21 and 22.
The national senior champion, T. J. Tabak (Canterbury), and the riders he beat in the final and semi-final respectively, A. J. Ineson (Southland) and R. D. Thomson (Auckland), are all concentrating on the road trials. The bronze medal winner at the championships, W. G. Kendall (Canterbury), is unable to attend the trials for business reasons. The result’is a thin field of three junior pursuit riders — D. A. Comparini (Wellington), the junior champion—S. J. Stephen (Canterbury) and C. Jones (Southland). Set New Record Comparini, who last week set a New Zealand record for the junior pursuit, will be probably under the closest scrutiny, although J. A. Dean (West Coast-North Island) could be nominated by his centre to take part. Dean was runner-up to Comparini in the national titles. Another surprise is that V. L. Newiove (Auckland) has not been named in the sprints. The holder of nine New Zealand records and the Auckland sprint title, Newiove will have only the kilometre time
trial to which to force his claims. There will be a 10 miles pursuit series and sprints on each night, but a time trial on the first night only (April 21) unless the selectors decide they require another. Nominate 10 Riders No selections will be made for the road Mai to be held at North Shore on April 23, but each centre may nominate up to 10 riders, provided each has ridden to one of the regional trials before the final race. The competitors named for each event were:— 500 Metres Sprint.—J. Beere, J. B. Bigwood, F. Claris (Auckland), G. A. Bing, N. F. Joyce, M. F. Vertongen fWest CoastNorth Island), M. W. Litolff, T. R. Weir (Canterbury), P. H. P. Robinson (Southland). 1000 Metres Time Trial.—V. L. Newlove <Auckland), J. A. Dean, Joyce (West Coast-North Island), G. F. Wright (Wellington), J. H. A. Cleary, C. G. Fitzgerald (Canterbury), C. Jones (Southland). 4000 Metres Individual Pursuit.—D. A. Comparini (Wellington), w. G. Kendall, s. J. Stephen (Canterbury), Jones. 10 Miles.—Beere, Bigwood, Claris, Bing, Dean, Vartongen, Comparini, Wright, Cleary. Fitzgerald, LitoUf, Stephen, Robinson, D. L. and L. O. Booth (Southland).
