Appeal For The Aged
The annual street appeal today by the Aged People’s Welfare Council deserves generous public support. Working quietly in the community for the last 14 years, the council is not as well known as it deserves to be. Its activities are spread over all the institutions in Christchurch which cater for the welfare of elderly people. It maintains Langford House, and co-ordinates (but does not direct) the work of other organisations in the same field. One of its tasks is to keep up to date the list of applicants for admission to each home for elderly people. The council provides or arranges home visits, entertainment and social amenities, and gardening services. Its continuing survey of the elderly population of Christchurch, professionally directed and carried out, has drawn attention to the special problems of the aged, and usually indicated the need for specific action. Those who contribute to today’s appeal can be confident that the funds will be spent where the need is greatest.
