Egg Price Move Fails
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 22. A remit from the OtagoSouthland branch, urging standardisation of all New Zealand egg prices at North Island level, was soundly defeated at the first day of the annual conference of New Zealand poultryfarmers in Invercargill today. It was said that egg prices in the North Island had been higher than in the South Island for many years because of higher feed costs. North Island wheat supplies had to come either from the South Island or from Australia.
Last year South Island poultrymen received an average payout of 4s 0.3 d a dozen while the North Island figure was 4s 2.4 d. However, the conference carried a remit urging the Poultry Board to seek greater flexibility from the Price Tribunal to the pricing of eggs. The present procedure is that the Egg Marketing Authority, a companion body to the Poultry Board, recommends changes in prices to the prices division of the tribunal, but the tribunal has the final say. Eggs were one of the first commodities to be placed under price control to New Zealand in 1939.
