Chch.-Wellington Carrying Service
Trucks loaded in Christchurch one day will be delivering goods in Wellington the next day after an over-night trip in the interisland steamer Maori when a new carrying service begins next week.
Port Freighters, a Christchurch carrying organisation, is now in a joint venture with a Wellington firm to handle cargo from the roll-on ferry service between Lyttelton and Wellington. The Wellington firm with which Port Freighters is associated is Barton Ginger and Company, Ltd. Registration of a new organisation to be known as Cargo Distributors, Ltd., was announced in this week’s “Mercantile Gazette.”
Barton Ginger is the oldestestablished Wellington carrying company and Customs House agents and has a worldwide reputation. Port Freighters does most of the carrying between Lyttelton and Christchurch. Vryenhoek) said last evening.
The service would be restricted to every other day at present, because only the Maori had roll-on facilities, he said. However, when the Wahine came into service within the next few months there would be a daily service, Mr Vryenhoek said. A trial shipment was made from Christchurch to Wellington last week.
A prefabricated house was loaded at a Sockburn timber yard on Wednesday. The house was hauled to Lyttelton by semi-trailer and driven straight on to the cargo deck of the Maori. Only the trailer was ship ped to Wellington—the tractor unit was left at Lyttelton On arrival a tractor from Barton Ginger hauled the trailer off the ship. Later the same day the house was delivered to its site at Lower Hutt only 20 hours from the time it was loaded;
