GISBORNE, March 23.
A bill aimed at improving the rights of children born out of wedlock was likely to be introduced in Parliament, Mrs E. I. Tombleson, member of Parliament for Gisborne, told the Gisborne Justices of Peace Association tonight.
“Our humanitarian tradition in New Zealand has always been opposed to depriving a child who has the misfortune to be born to an unmarried mother of the right of more fortunate children,” said Mrs Tombleson.
“However, under the law, illegitimate children‘are still suffering from certain serious disabilities.” Mrs Tombleson said it was proposed to give illegitimate
children the same legal rights as other children.
The principal change would be in the field of .succession to property. Mrs Tombleson said it was also proposed to encourage fathers of children bom out of wedlock to take a more responsible attitude to the children.
“This proposed legislation, I am sure, is another step forward in bringing our thinking up to date in a modem and changing society.”
