Security Is A Warm Cell
fN.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 23.
A 19-year-old Maori who has spent only 30 days out of institutions in the last four and a half years told the Magistrate's Court today that he felt “more secure inside than outside.”
He is Michael Rapana, who appeared for sentence on two charges of burglary and one of committing a breach of probation.
Rapana was sent to prison for six months on each of the burglarycharges.
The offences were committed a few days after Rapana had been released from prison.
Rapana told the Court that his sole purpose since being released was to try and make a better start. “I didn’t quite make it, though.”
Mr W. M. Willis, S.M., “You didn’t even get started.”
Rapana said he had an urge to help other people and had spent too much money on them.
The Magistrate: “These offences were committed only a day or so after your release. In the last four and a half years you have spent only 30 days outside.”
Rapana: “I feel more secure inside than outside.”
