Memorial Light Dedicated

A light that will shine continually by the stairway at the Y.W.C.A. hostel was dedicated to the memory of Miss Jean Holderness by Canon D. D. Thorpe yesterday. Miss Holderness. who died last year in her eighties, had been a member of the Y.W.CA. since 1944. She served on the board, was a member of its hostel committee, and was widely known in the community for her sewing circle, which had an annual sale to raise funds for the association’s work. The light was a memorial to a life of loving service and devotion to girls and their welfare; it would give light to the hostel girls every time they went upstairs to their rooms, said Canon Thorpe at a short dedication service. Light of Faith “It represents the light of her faith and points the way to the light in the life of a good Christian woman." he said. “The light also represents the principles of the Y.W.C.A. and the life revolving round the hostel, which gives love, security and comfort to girls away from home.” The candle-shaped bronze light, placed at the top of the first flight of stairs, is set above a small plaque which reads: “In memory of Jean Holderness, a loyal friend of the Y.W.C-A., 1965.” Three sisters of the late Miss Holderness attended the ceremony—Mrs G. C. Warrington. Miss Mary and Miss Mina Holderness. The picture shows three sisters of Miss Holderness: from left, Mr s G. C. Warrington and

the Misses Mary and Mina Holderness. At back is Miss Webb and at right Mr Thorpe.
