Russians Raise Rare Piece
(N.Z. Preu Assn. —Copyright) MOSCOW, March 23.
Soviet scientists have raised a rare piece of tlhe earth’s upper mantle from the bottom of the Indian ocean, the Soviet news agency, Tass, reported.
The mantle is the uncharted layer of the earth lying below the crust. Soviet scientists praised the feat as a “scientific discovery” and predicted it would yield new data on the formation of the earth. Tass said a steel trawl hanging below the ship dipped to mane than three miles and scooped up the sample of the mantle from a canyon on the ocean floor, east of the island of Madagascar. The sample contained an ‘hmusuaily heavy” composition of dlairfc green stone made up partly of iron, magnesium and silicon, Tass said.
