EASTER EGGS
More Varied Output
Christchurch probably has the best choice of Easter eggs in New Zealand this year. But prospective buyers will have to hurry, for already considerable orders have been received from as far afield as Auckland and Invercargill. Variety and improved aesthetic appeal are new features of the traditional eggs. Local manufacturers, who have had the monopoly of this market since import restrictions were imposed some years ago, seem to have taken the initiative and have imported ideas instead. The more extravagant can pay nearly £3 for a single egg. These are the most expensive and show an almost Continental influence. They stand about 2ft high and are made of beautifully moulded icing stretched over a candy frame. The eggs are hollow and are available in a variety of pastel shades or in floral designs. Smaller types, of similar designs, are also available.
Greater emphasis has been placed on novelty lines for children. For a few shillings, caskets of eggs mixed with brightly coloured sweets can be obtained. Toys, too. are appearing in Easter parcels for children. The most popular range is between 10s and 15s and for this money, a toy, such as a small boat or a doll, can be bought. Evidence of American influence is also prevalent this year in Easter gifts for adults. For the first time, hampers of decorated chocolates and eggs are available in a variety of ranges. These cost about 30s each.
