Rough Play Threat To Test Chances

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

SYDNEY.

Unless the Australian Rugby League took “drastic action” to prevent rough games in which star players were being injured, it would be difficult for Australia to field a test team against England later this year.

The Sydney “Sun” sports writer, E. E. Christensen, said yesterday that the injuries leading players had suffered so far this season raised the question of how long they could keep on play-

ing under such conditions. Players would be “battered out of the game” if matches such as Tuesday night’s preseason clash between South Sydney and Balmain, two leading Sydney teams, were allowed to continue, “The referees and League

judiciary must act immediately,” Christensen wrote. As a result of Tuesday night’s match, K. Barnes and R. Boland, both leading players, suffered concussion, Barnes for the second succes-

sive match. The test winger, M. Cleary, was sent off the field after 10 minutes and he and another South Sydney player have been charged with punching. They are due to appear before the league judiciary committee tonight.
