CHURCH UNION
Discussion In Lent Sermons
The beliefs of the four denominations which, with the Anglican Church, are negotiating for church union are being examined during Lent at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Merivale, in sermons from ministers of the four denominations and in groups discussing the document on church union published by the Committee for Church Union.
On the first three Sundays of Lent the preachers have been the Rev. Malcolm Wilson (Knox Presbyterian Church), the Rev. H. R. Ogier (Churches of Christ), and the Rev. W. R. Laws (connexional secretary of the Methodist Church). Next Sunday the preacher will be the Rev. K. D. J. Inglis (Trinity Congregational Church), and on the last Sunday in Lent a summing-up is to be made by the general secretary of the National Council of Churches (the Rev. D. M. Taylor), who is an Anglican. The sermons had caused great interest among the congregation, said the Vicar (the Ven. S. E. Woods) yesterday. Lay people knew very little of what other churches believed. The sermons had emphasised the contribution each denomination would make to a unified church, and had provided valuable material for the weekly discussion groups held to examine the document on church unity.
