SYDENHAM SEAT

Mr Armstrong Standing

Mr A. E. Armstrong, Labour member of Parliament for Napier from 1943 to 1951, will be an independent candidate for the Sydenham electorate this year. Mr Armstrong has had a chequered career in national and local body politics, as well as in the trade union movement. He was an independent on the City Council at the age of 26—he is now 63—and returned to the council and the Lyttelton Harbour Board as a Labour Party representative in 1962. He was not selected by the party last October, but stood as an independent and lost both seats.

He was suspended from membership of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants after public criticism of a 48-hour general stoppage, and was later suspended from the New Zealand Labour Party. Mr Armstrong is a son of Mr H. T. Armstrong, one of the first Labour Cabinet Ministers and a colleague of the father of Miss M. B. Howard, who now holds the Sydenham seat with a 1963 majority of 5399.
