Three New York Papers Merge
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter— Copyright)
NEW YORK, March 22.
The merger of three major New York newspapers into one publishing venture was announced yesterday.
The new company—to be known as World-Journal-Tribune, Inc.—will publish the present morning “New York Herald-Tribune,” an evening paper called the “World-Journal” (a merger of the “Joumal-American” and “World-Telegram”) and a Sunday paper called the “World-Journal and Tribune.” The combination means the numerical loss of one afternoon daily and one Sunday newspaper (the “JournalAmerican” week-end edition). The new company will be owned equally by the Hearst Corporation, which publishes the “Joumal-American," the E. W. Scripps Company, which publishes the “WorldTelegram” and Whitney Communications Corporation, publisher of the “New York Herald-Tribune.”
The three papers will file the merger plan with the Justice Department in Washington tomorrow. The three owners will have an equal representation on
the board of the new company. All three newspapers have been losing money heavily in contrast to the city’s two other morning newspapers—the profitable “New York Times” and “New York Daily News.” The sixth newspaper, the “New York Post,” about breaks even.
