“Minister Of Tourism Should Not Be M.P”
New Zealand should have 1 a Minister of Tourism who is not a member of Parliament, but “a man who knows the visitor industry inside out,” according to the motel trade journal, "Tourist Court.” The tourist industry would boom, “if only the Government could or would see past its agricultural nose,” the journal says in a leading article in its latest issue. In his capacity as Minister of Defence Mr Eyre “has to battle to secure the funds he needs for the defence budget. “He probably feels that if he also asked for the funds he knows are necessary for the development of tourism, he would make himself un-
j f popular with the all-powerful > Treasury. . . .” -| The solution to the prob- > - lem, the article says, would : be the appointment of a 1 Minister of Tourism “from t outside the Government who knows the visitor industry inI side out and who has the - business acumen to make t decisions and get things ! done.” ! Such an appointment would not be revolutionary, ■ "Tourist Court” says. Other i countries, including Britain, i the United States and . Holland, often recruit Cabi- ■ net members from industry ; and commerce.
