Internationals To Race At Halswell
Two of the finest scrambles riders in the country, K. Cleghorn and A. T. Gibbes (both Palmerston North), have entered for New Zealand’s toughest race—the Halswell 100 grand national moto-cross—to be held on the notoriously hazardous Findlay’s Farm circuit on Sunday.
Both are internationallyranked riders.
Gibbes represented Australia in the recent international series, although he now lives permanently in New Zealand, and Cleghorn, his brother-in-law, rode for New Zealand. Gibbes, a former works rider for A.J.S. in England, has entered for all three major 30-lap races and will ride the 250 c.c. Greeves which served him so well in the international series. On this he hopes to be able to repeat his tremendous performance of two seasons ago when he won all three races. Last season Gibbes won both the 250 c.c. and 350 c.c. races on this machine, but had to be content with runner-up position to Cleghorn in the
500 c.c. event. Cleghorn has won the 500 c.c. class twice in the last three years. Another top-liner entered is A. Collison (Palmerston North), who won the Christchurch international motocross earlier this season when the leader, B. Lundin (Sweden) crashed on the last lap. Other prominent riders com. peting are N. Miller (Blenheim), the South Island 500 c.c. T.T. champion; G. Terry (Palmerston North), the New Zealand 250 c.c. scramble champion; N. McElwain (Blenheim), the South Island open scramble champion; G. Stapleton (Christchurch), and the former South Island champion, D. Boyce (Blenheim).
