Coach Resigns As Soccer Selector
Canterbury’s soccer coach, Mr R. C. Carter, last evening resigned as convenor and co-selector of the representative under-20 team.
However, on his submission, he will be sole coach to the i three senior teams. Last week Mr Carter was i appointed convenor and coselector of the under-20 team when sole selectors were [elected for the senior and [under-18 teams. In a letter to the Canter- . bury Football Association's i management committee, Mr Carter said, “For the sake of 'consistency,” he would with.draw as co-selector for the under-20 team.
Mr Carter said he intended no disrespect to Mr G. Spiers (the other under-20 selector), “quite the reverse.” “If it is genuinuely felt by members that my advice and co-operation in selection is not required for the other senior grades then, in fairness to Mr Spiers, this must be so in his grade.
Right As Sole Coach
‘1 have enjoyed very cordial relationships with the team selectors and see no reason why this should not continue."
However, Mr Carter said, he reserved the right “to be as much sole coach as the selector is sole selector.” Mr Carter was present at the meeting and made clear he did not have a “chip on his shoulder.” He also reiterated his desire to be sole coach and said, in the past, he had had more coaches than players.
Commenting on the publicity given to his non-appoint-ment as a co-selector for the under 18 and senior teams. Mr Carter said: “We could talk about this and have a bit of a row and that would create a bad image—good for the Rugby people."
The committee also decided as a result of what it considered “adverse publicity." that only C.F.A. material released by the publicity officer (Mr M. Pahi) or the president (Mr J. Smith), would be recognised as having any credence by the management committee. Schools' Grade
The committee approved the principle of the under 20 competition being divided into two sections: a school's grade and a club’s grade. Mr R. ,1. Palmer put the suggestion forward on behalf of the match committee.
If a South Island League is formed this season, the two teams leading after the first round of the Hurley Shield would be Canterbury representatives.
The committee declined a request from the Wanderers club to reinstate M. Brandt, who was given a life suspension three years ago.
