MADRAS ST. BRIDGE
Move To Keep Ironwork
Retention of the old iron balustrades and the iron lattice arches beneath the Madras street bridge will be urged on the City Council by the Christchurch Civic Trust’s board. Mr P. J. Beaven told the board that this bridge was the next scheduled for widening. He saw no reason why these attractive old features should not be preserved on the sides of a widened concrete structure.
The crescent of Lombardy poplars along the Avon river between Manchester street and Madras street enclosed a close-knit, fully mature part of Christchurch, Mr Beaven said.
With Mr H. G. Royds, he believed that the attractive ironwork on the Madras street bridge gave character. “The Victoria street bridge may go when the town hall is built and we should act early to preserve the special features of the others,” said Mr Beaven.
“This lovely old ironwork on our city bridges is not always noticed or appreciated," said the chairman (Mr John Oakley). On Mr R. H. Hammond’s motion, it was agreed to ask the City Engineer to receive a deputation about the Madras street bridge.
