£l10 Raised At S.P.C.A. Fair

The £llO raised at the first fair held by the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at Sockburn on Saturday will go towards a cattery the society hopes to build. The cattery is expected to cost £4OO. At present there are about 130 cats running loose in the area according to the animals’ home manager (Mr L. Wade). Ten guineas was also raised for the speying fund. The fund is to provide for the speying of cats not kept especially for breeding. The society hopes to lessen the number of unwanted cats which are ultimately killed or become strays. The home at present has five sows and 40 stare pigs recently taken over from a Christchurch man. The society hopes that when they are sold the money obtained will cover the cost of keeping them.
