VESSEL RAIDED

Contraband Seized

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, March 22.

Customs officers who raided the freighter, Norman, at Aotea quay, Wellington, early this morning, were rewarded with a haul of 23 contraband transistor radios and eight watches. The Assistant Collector of Customs, Mr S. G. Hoy, said suspicions were aroused by the seizure of a large transistor from a civilian trying to smuggle it ashore. The ship has been at Wellington for some time, but was not raided sooner, as it has been at other New Zealand ports. A team of six officers started searching the Norman, manned by European officers and Chinese ratings, about 8 a.iri.

Mr Hoy said that the seized radios and watches were found in wastepaper baskets in two of the cabins in the crew’s quarters. He said that the search is still continuing.

No Work.— There was a labour surplus on the Lyttelton waterfront again yesterday. At 7 a.m. 530 men were engaged, but an additional 146 men who received attendance pay were unable to obtain jobs.
