Picnic Areas Damage By Vandals
Thefts of plants from highway reserves and picnic areas •nd vandalism in these places •re hampering efforts of the Ministry of Works at beautification and the provision and maintenance of picnic spots, says the ministry. Cable-drum type tables are
the main target of vandals at off-highway parking areas. Seating, rubbish bins, fireplaces and toilets also came in for much damaging attention. Pipes have been wrenched from the walls of toilets, cisterns completely removed and doors damaged. Dumping household rubbish in picnic areas and leaving litter in them is also fairly general, though not so much in well-maintained spots. Users seemed to follow the pattern set by those who have been there before them.
The Ministry of Works says that vandalism, theft and other abuses of reserves and picnic spots make it difficult for it and the National Roads Board to carry out the policy of beautifying highway surroundings and providing pleasant parking places for motorists.
Golf Winner.—Lionel Herbert, of Louisiana, won the 110,000 dollar Florida Citrus golf tournament at Orlando with a final round of 69—two under par—and a 72-bole total of 279.
