TEACHER AT UNIVERSITY
Experiment For Year Mr T. R. Hitchings, of the Riccarton High School, has been elected first visiting teaching fellow in the chemistry department of the University of Canterbury. He took a master of science degree at Victoria University of Wellington. This is the first such appointment in this country and it may be extended to other disciplines and other universities if it is a success. The fellowship was offered to secondary school teachers of chemistry with the idea that a year’s university experience would give better understanding of requirements in new entrants from the schools and, at the same time, give university staff a better appreciation of practical teaching problems in the schools. The fellowship has an emolument of £6OO a year. The Director-General of Education has agreed that full teaching salary may also be paid. The fellow will have some teaching responsibilities with stage 1 students and also be associated with certain research groups.
