Police, Customs Meet Yawl

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 3. Customs officers and police boarded the Auckland yawl Makaretu on its arrival from Northland this morning. Led by the Auckland Collector of Customs (Mr C. H. Levy) they met the yawl at Admiralty steps at 10 a.m. A 45ft steel craft built in Whangarei, the Makaretu is understood to have just returned from a holiday trip to Norfolk Island. On board were the owner, Mr K. Harris, of Panmure, and a crewman. Business Visit A trade mission of about 30 businessmen from New Orleans will arrive in Auckland on May 8 for a threeday visit. The president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce (Mr T. R. Sussex) said the Mayor of New Orleans was

expected to travel with the group. Members would be accompanied by their wives. The Governors of Louisiana and Florida would be represented. Eastward Ho! Air New Zealand opened its Auckland-Hong Kong air service today. The inaugural DCB flight left Auckland International Airport with : full load of passengers. Twelve Chinese girls escorted passengers to th( plane. Limit Wanted A remit which would severely limit and control house-to-house collections if il became law was approved bj the Municipal Association in Auckland today. The remit, sponsored by the Northcote Borough Council, asked that no person or organisation be permitted to solicit money or goods by house-to-house collections except by written permission from local authorities. The remit was opposed by several delegates, who felt that a large number of worthy charitable organisations might suffer through the ban and that it might be used to political ends by some councils. Multiple Form The Municipal Association will ask the Government to consider using a four-part application form for election enrolments. The form would advise the Government electoral officer and the local body of a new enrolment and would give notice to the former electorate and the local body of the change of address Jurors’ Fees The Municipal Association wants the Government to raise payments to jurors to the level of an economic wage and to meet the cost from the Consolidated Fund. The association also decided to press for a review of the method of selecting jurors so that persons called but not required to serve received the same payment as those servoing as jurors.

Flying Home A member of the visiting American Chapman College students who arrived in Wellington yesterday to spend two and a half days in this country is flying back to America. In Featherston this morning Miss Judy Myers received word that her father was seriously ill in Pittsburgh. Miss Myers returned to Wellington, where arrangements were made for her to obtain a connexion to Auckland to catch an overseas flight there. Four-Year Terms A remit that the life of Parliament be extended to four years will be promoted

by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. Diesel Fumes The Retail Motor Trade Association will ask the Commissioner of Transport (Mr R. J. Polaschek) to forbid unnecessary air pollution by diesel motor exhaust fumes. The Dominion executive of the association, meeting in Wellington today, said pollution from diesel fumes was “dangerous and alarming.” A delegate said it was possible to regulate fumes, but some operators adjusted diesel motors to get maximum fuel economy, irrespective of consequent smoke and pollu tion.
