LOOKING AT CANADA

I Canada’s vast area would make the work of an ombudsman slow but the office still would be feasible, Sir Guy Powles, the New Zealand Ombudsman, said today. Sir Guy Powles, who investigated complaints of poor administration by Government departments, said I most complaints would | have to be dealt with at the seat of government. Because of Canada’s huge area, handling would be delayed because investigators would have to be
sent from Ottawa to the source of the complaint. Sir Guy Powles will meet Saskatchewan provincial government officials to discuss the office of Ombudsman. The idea was proposed in the legislature last year by an Opposition member but was defeated. Sir Guy Powles, the first Ombudsman in a Commonwealth country, said he handled about 750 complaints a year. Many were settled when Government regulations were properly explained to the person complaining.
