Record Broken, Then Cycling Washed Out

A magnificent New Zealand record by the Wellington junior, D. A. Comparini, and a rained-out evening session were widely divergent features of the first day of the Rothman’s national track cycling championships at English Park yesterday.

Comparini set a New Zealand record for the 4000 metres individual pursuit. He slashed his own time of smin 18.3 sec, set a year ago, by s.3sec, and was nearly four seconds faster than the best senior. The old record was beaten again by Canterbury’s S. Stephen who, although he weakened slightly in the final half, still managed smin 16.8 sec. Upsets In Heats There were two surprises in the heats. The first was the failure of the title-holder, D. Stowell (West Coast North Island), to qualify for the individual pursuit although he easily beat his last year’s winning time.

In fairly difficult conditions, there was a number of fast times. Canterbury supplied two semi-finalists in T. J. Tabak and W. G. Kendall. Kendall will probably’ meet his victor, R. D. Thomson (Auckland), in the semifinals, and Tabak will ride against the fastest qualifier. A. J. Ineson (Southland). The other shock was in the first of the senior sprints. V. L. New’love (Auckland), coholder of the national resident record, was beaten in a desperate finish by Southland’s L. Booth. However, Newlove still has a chance to qualify in the reselections. Ludlam’s Failure Another minor surprise was the failure of the youthful New Zealand road representative. J. Ludlam (Waikato), to

qualify in the junior individual pursuit. The events scheduled for last evening, which included the two time trials, will now be held at 9.30 a.m. this morning and there will be three sessions today.
