Two nuclear bombs blew apart when a United States bomber collided with an air tanker near Palomares, Spain, in January, Defence Department officials said yesterday. It was the first official acknowledgement that a nuclear weapon was missing in Spain. They said that the bombs were blown apart by their conventional explosive charges and there was no nuclear explosion. The explosion spread plutonium 239 and uranium 235 over ah area of about 100 ft.
