‘Announce Action’ (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 3. If the Government was contemplating taking firm action to arrest Japanese fishing poachers who broke the 12-mile and three-mile limits, it should announce the specific instructions it had given to the Navy or Air Force to carry out arrests, said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) in Auckland today. “The Government should nominate the ships it has put or will order out to sea to stop the poaching,” he said. “Everyone can appreciate how incensed the local fishermen are over this poaching. They are justifiably disappointed that the Government has taken no action.” The Government should take steps to avoid any incidents involving New Zealand fishermen. Incidents would not happen if the law was properly policed. The situation should be deal with under the process of law. “We can sympathise with the impatience of the fishermen when they are witnesses to these intrusion:,” he said. “It needs firm action by the Government.”
