Good Trial For Trentham Sprint
Tumble, one of only two horses from Riccarton engaged at Trentham on Saturday, showed sharp speed on the trial grass on his home track yesterday.
Mr J. B. Douglas-Clifford's Railway Handicap candidate had his light-weight race rider, A. H. Eastwood, up when he dashed in from the three furlongs in 34 4-ssec. Though only at threequarter pace earlier, he recorded 50 l-ssec for his halfmile.
Tumble earned a start at Trentham with a close second to Bellarook at Wingatui last Saturday week.
R. Preece travelled north last night with Tumble and the two-year-old, Roman General.
Roman General ran keenly in a barrier trial from the five furlongs yesterday. Though under strong restraint from outside the furlong he did not finish far behind Coral Prince and Fine, which finished in a gap behind the leaders. Blue Seas and Sabell. Roman General, like Tumble, was a close second on the first day of the Dunedin meeting, and had luck against him in the running. The Wingatui stablemates, Palisade and Warfare, were exercised at Riccarton yesterday morning before continuing their trip north. Palisade was let off with two rounds of striding work
on the plough. R. J. Skelton will ride Mr A. T. Ottrey's good stayer in the H. R. Chalmers Handicap on Saturday.
Misjudge, a stablemate of Tumble and Roman General, was first home with two lengths to spare from Agrippa and Seminole in a second barrier trial over five furlongs on the outside of the course proper yesterday. Misjudge runs in the Peninsula Handicap at Motukarara on Saturday, and R. Moir will ride him. Riding engagements for the Banks Peninsula meeting include:—
