Pop Shows Ban

fN.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Mar. 1

The Wellington City Council may consider banning beat-type concerts from the Town Hall because of the damage to fittings during the Rolling Stones’ show there last night

The Deputy Mayor, Cr. C. H. Benrey, said tonight: “We will have to give much deeper thought before we have these concerts in the Town Hall. I cannot speak for the whole council. but that is my personal opinion.

“We just can’t have this sort of nonsense going on. Damage to the Town Hall property, even if It is made good, is too much for me,” he said.

A report on the damage to hall fittings will be submitted to the council. Council officers said that on Monday night teen-agers had damaged 36 seats, turned on the firehose near the Mayor’s office—flooding the landing and stairs—badly damaged lavatory fittings, bent a curtain rod near the main door, and broke two light fittings backstage.

Under the terms of hiring the Town Hall the performers or organisers of a concert are responsible for all damage. Also under the terms of the hire, they guarantee to maintain order during the performance. City Council officers today had not completed estimates of the damage.
