ASSAULT CHARGES
Sentences Increased (N.Z. Pr»s» Ajioclationl DUNEDIN, Feb. 28 It would be impossible if inmates of any prison felt that assaults on officers or escapes would be treated in a minor way. Mr T. A. Ross, S.M., said in the Dunedin Magistrate’s Court today in answer to counsel's suggestion that Mattie Mareana Rewiti. aged 23. and Carole Ann Heta, aged 19, be treated leniently in view of their age. Rewiti and Heta both appeared for sentence on charges arising from an incident in the women's prison last month and were each ordered to serve another three months’ imprisonment at the conclusion of their existing sentences.
Both girls had been remanded under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act when they pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated assault and one of having escaped from custody. Heta was also charged with wilful damage.
