DISPOSAL OF RUBBISH
Investigation At Lyttelton
The Lyttelton Borough Council decided on Monday evening to investigate rubbish disposal in the borough. The deputy-Mayor (Cr. N. D. Walker) presided, as the Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett) was attending the municipal conference at Auckland. Cr. G. C. Adams said he was not satisfied with the system whereby only one tin could be put out. Cr. N. D. Parratt said the system seemed to have worked well for two years. He felt complaints of rubbish that was not collected should be made to the council offices. He moved the system be left unchanged. Cr. G. Boyd seconded the amendment.
Cr. Adams said all he wanted was a report on the matter.
Cr. R. H. Duff said the system had been operating satisfactorily.
Cr. I. G. Henderson said he was “very happy” with the present system. The amendment was lost on a show of hands. A letter from the Post Office said trees at the Heathcote waterworks were interfering with telephone lines and required topping. The council decided the matter would be investigated and appropriate action taken. The report of the gas manager (Mr K. D. Walters) said 53 tons of coal was carbonised during January this year, compared with 51 tons in January, 1965. Gas made totalled 16,090 cu. ft., compared with 17,450 cu. ft the previous January. The works were running quite well and repairs were nearly finished. Leaks in the number two gas-holder had been repaired. Cr. R. H. Duff was elected to represent the council on the District Roads Council. An application from Mr M. J. Leech to hold a go-kart meeting at Diamond Harbour on March 13 was approved by the council.
