Brighton Still Unbeaten In Indoor Soccer

Although under the threat of relegation to the second division next season, New Brighton continued to sweep all before it in the current indoor soccer series at Cowles Stadium on Monday evening. Playing copybook football, snapping up every chance and half chance to score, Brighton outplayed Technical Old Boys, as it has done every opponent it has met in the series, to retain an unbeaten record and the leadership of the major division. Brighton beat Technical, 7-2, easing off only in the last minute when Technical scored its two goals in quick succession, and leads the table with 12 points. Equalised with Penalty High School Old Boys scored with the last kick of the game, a penalty by its talented young player, B. Wilkinson, to snatch a 4-4 draw with Shamrock, and is lying second with 10 points, but have played a game more than Brighton. Results were:

Shirley-Nomads 2 (D. Ennis 2), University 1 (A. Kerrigan); Waterside 5 (F. Nicol 4, J. Donnelly, own goal), Overseas Carpets 2 (C. Edwards, P. Marley); Police 7 (M. Jones 4, B. Rumbold 2, J. Sweetman), University 2 (R. Binns); Brighton 7 (A. Caine 4. T. Conley, R. Elston), Technical 0.8. 2 (C. Jones 2); Shamrock 4 (J. Killick 2, J. Logue 2), H. 5.0.8. 4 (P. Kay 2. C. Hicks, B. Wilkinson); Western 6 (M. White 4, C. Martin, T. Langan), Hornby 2 (W. Doornenbal, W. Quirk).

Points (games played in parentheses): Brighton (6) 12, H. 5.0.8. (7) 10, Hornby (7) 9, Western (7) 8, Shamrock (6) 7, Technical (7) 6, Waterside (7) 6. Shirley-Nomads (6) 5, Police (6) 4. University (7) 3, Overseas Carpets (6) 2. Caine’s Record Total

Brighton’s performance was again a masterly one, and its goals record in the six games it has played, 37 for and six against, is proof of the club’s shooting power and defensive qualities.

The inspiration again stemmed from the club’s professional coach, T. Conley, and the goals from the young A. Caine, four more to bring his indoor tally for the season to 20 and a club record. But Brighton is more than a twoman team as Technical was quick to learn, and as they ran themselves into trouble time and again. Technical made silly errors that conceded at least four goals, and then could not retrieve these lapses because it would keep carrying the ball to the Brighton defenders, who had little more to do than drop back and present an almost impenetrable goalmouth. With little better shooting Technical might have got two more goals, but its own failure to mark tightly, and then when it had gained the ball move it quickly to catch the Brighton players off balance, cost it any real chance of victory. Hornby was Weakened

A weakened Hornby was well beaten, 6-2, by Western, and left H. 5.0.8. to take up the chase of Brighton. But the Old Boys were desperately lucky to get a point from Shamrock. They led 3-9 at one time, were 3-4 down with seconds remaining, and then were awarded a penalty. There was only time for Wilkinson to take the kick and score before the whistle sounded to end the game. The Waterside marksman, F. Nicol, was again among the goals with four more, taking his tally in seven games to 15, while Shamrock’s top scorer, J. Logue, collected two more, and now has scored 15 also.

There were many brilliantly taken goals, but none more outstanding than Brighton’s first—a pass by Conley that split wide open the Technical defence, and a shot by Elston that never looked anything else but a goal It is with such brilliance that Brighton is running away with the indoor soccer championship for 1966.
