Givenchy’s Casual Country-Girl Look
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright)
PARIS, March 1. A casual country-girl look for spring was shown in Hubert de Givenchy’s showing to the press yesterday. All Givenchy’s mannequins wore their hair in loose, curly styles, paired with heavy eye make-up and no lipstick as they showed off his new sporty young clothes. His creations go with flatheeled shoes, fish-net knee socks or stockings, kerchief headscarves and satchel handbags slung across one shoulder. Givenchy’s spring collection was one of his best for many seasons. Hemlines stop just above the kneecap and short skirts are emphasised in tunic dresses with a two-coloured theme. A typical example is a two-piece navy blue wool jersey dress, worn under a white coat lined in bright red to match red fishnet stockings. Givenchy abandons his stark
unfitted chemise for belted waistlines and wider skirts with loose flared panels. Most day. dresses have collarless necklines filled in with printed scarves. Sleeves are back with shoulder-cap effects or are short and tight. Many dress and jacket ensembles are featured in waterproof fabrics. Street clothes go with kerchiefs knotted peasant-style under the chin or have their own cowled hoods. Givenchy’s full-length linen hostess dresses were among the most applauded models. They have princess silhouettes in two-tone effects, or are covered with cotton thread embroidery.
Hair-styles go abstract with the formal clothes. They are contrived with false hairpieces lacquered to the consistency of cement. Coneshaped chignons set on the back of the head stretch 18 inches long and end in a point set off with a flashy jewel.
