ASTRONAUTS’ VISIT

hi Christchurch For Tivo Hours

Two United States astronauts, Walter Schirra and Frank Borman, will spend two hours in Christchurch after their arrival here from Australia on March 14.

The two men are likely to be met at Christchurch airport by a member of the Cabinet and possibly the United States Ambassador to New Zealand (Mr H. B. Powell). The two men will drive into the city, along a route to be announced later, to a civic reception in the Civic Theatre at 2 p.m. After a welcome by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning), the two men will be invited to speak. The reception will last for about 30 minutes. Afternoon tea will be served later in the Mayoral chambers, and the two men will be driven back to Christchurch airport for their departure for Wellington. The Assistant Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes) said yesterday that the public was invited to the reception at the Civic Theatre. Tickets for this would be available from the City Council offices as from Monday, March 7. Mr Hayes said that considerable interest in the astronauts’ visit was being shown by the university and by schools in the city. For the civic reception numbers of seats were being kept for small school parties, he said.
