Budget Is Record GN’.Z Press Assn—Copyright! NEW DELHI. March I. India yesterday announced a record defence budget for the coming year—nearly one-third of the country's total planned expenditure. Of the total budgeted expenditure of 24.071.100.000 rupees (about £1.851.800,000), 7.976.700.000 rupees (about £613,590.000) will go on defence. the Indian Finance Minister. Mr Sachindra Chaudhury, told Parialment. “We cannot afford to take any chances with the security of the nation, devoted though we are to the cause of peace,” he said. The budget comes at * time when India’s foreign exchange is badly shaken, and when the country faces food shortages amounting to the threat of widespread famine.
American Visit The Indian Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, will confer with President Johnson in Washington on March 28 and 29. the White House spokesman said yesterday.—Washington, March 1.
