MOUNTAIN SAFETY

Basic Rules Ignored Concern at the failure of persons to observe the basic rules governing safe travel in the mountains was expressed in a resolution adopted at a meeting of representatives of mountaineering clubs and other groups concerned with search and rescue operations. The meeting was called to form a committee, the primary purpose of which wifi be to promote co-ordination between mountain clubs and other organisations incorporated in the local search and rescue group. The resolution strongly condemned “solo travel in the mountains by inexperienced persons who disregard warnings given by experienced mountaineers. “This meeting is aware of the cost, and danger to others, as the result of foolhardiness, and urges that more consideration be given to wellknown and straight forward factors governing safe climbing.” the resolution said. Mr G. Buchanan was elected chairman of the co-ordinating committee, and Mr B. W. Thomas secretary. The balance of the committee will comprise nominated representatives of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand, the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, the New Zealand Alpine Club, Christchurch Ski Association, Deerstalkers’ Association, the Amateur Radio Emergency Corps, and the police. The committee will concern itself with all aspects of search and rescue operations, including instruction in search techniques, communications. and first aid. It is hoped that through its operation searches will become safer and more efficient.
