Arms Amnesty One unregistered firearm, a rifle, was surrendered at the Christchurch Central Police Station yesterday, the first day of the two-month arms amnesty in New Zealand. The rifle will be held pending inquiries about possible registration by a former owner. Light Rain There was light, internment rain with a light north-west wind in Christchurch yesterday. Temperatures in the city ranged between 60 degrees at 6 a.m. to 68 degrees recorded at the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. Similar temperatures with longer periods of heavier rain are forecast for today. , Bands’ Venue Dunedin will be host at this year’s New Zealand brass band championships from May 19 to 24. More than 30 bands and 1000 bandsmen are expected to attend. Bands competing the quickstep on Carisbrook on Sunday, May 22, will play music of their own choice. There are two tests for A, B and C grades, and one test and one piece of their own choice for D grade bands. The street march will be on May 20. The chief judge will be Mr Norman Henstridge, of Australia. Messrs Ralph Francis and W. A. Baylis, of Dunedin, and L. Thorne (of Auckland) will be assistant judges.—(P.A.)
