Alatna Has Fine Trip
Following the arrival of the United States Naval Supply tanker, Alatna, at Lyttelton from McMurdo Sound, yesterday morning, her master (Captain R. W. Coulter) commented favourably on the fine weather his ship had enjoyed on her fourth and final trip to Antarctica this season. Particularly on the homeward journey, smooth seas, and fair winds were experienced, he said. On the other hand, there was a fairly heavy concentration of ice to be seen in the vicinity of Latitude 65 degrees 40 minutes south and Longitude 176 degrees 10 minutes east. The area between 63 degrees south and 69 degrees south, is known as “iceberg alley” and on this occasion, ice, ranging from large bergs to growlers and brash ice, was more concentrated than on previous trips, he said. Sixteen United States Naval men returned aboard the supply vessel. The Alatna will bunker on Friday and is expected to sail on Saturday but her destination is not yet known except that she is homeward bound.
