Temporary Permit Annoys Lecturer

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN. March 1

After being appointed a teaching fellow at the University of Otago, Mr Adrian Chan, of Hong Kong, was shocked to find that he could get only a six-month temporary permit to enter New Zealand.

Mr Chan, aged 25, who has a B.A. honours degree from Sydney University, is to lecture in the history department on Chinese history and Chinese-American relations while working for his Ph D.

His entry permit is renewable after six months, and he understands he may be allowed to stay in New Zealand for two years. “But 1 can’t complete my degree in that time. It takes three years.” he said today. “And I can’t budget my life on a six-monthly basis.” Mr Chan said it took some time to find out from the New Zealand consular office in Sydney and the immigration authorities in 'Wellington that he would only be given a temporary entry permit. By then he had turned down other jobs. “It was a shock to me.” he said. “It is time Mr Shand, (the Minister of Immigration) got used to the fact that Orientals can be something other than market gardeners,” he said. People Friendly

He said he was enjoying his stay in Dunedin —he arrived late last week. The staff of the history department and everybody he had

met had been helpful and friendly.

Mr Chan’s parents are Australian citizens, although they live in Hong Kong, and he was sent to high school in Australia. After finishing his degree at Sydney University he taught at a Government high school in that city. He hopes to do his Ph D. thesis on the subject of Aus-tralian-New Zealand relations.
