Beethoven In Abbey Mass
Beethoven’s "Missa Solem■nis” will be heard in its liturgical setting in Britain this year. On October 13, the anniversary of the day Henry 111 brought the Confessor’s body to the new Abbey, the Dean of Westminster will celebrate High Mass with pomp and Beethoven's music.
The Missa Solemnis was written for the installation of a royal archbishop in Cologne Cathedral. Filled with splendour, and enormous contrasts between divine, imperial and ecclesiastical glory, and humble man, the Mass is one of Beethoven’s masterpieces.
