Aucklanders Leading

(N.Z. Preus Association) AUCKLAND. The Auckland crew of R. Dew (skipper), D. Scriven and M. Mulcahy took the lead on points on the first day of the Moffat . Cup, the national Idle-along yachting contest, sailed at Point Chevalier, Auckland, yesterday. Dew and his men were second to Hawke’s Bay in the opening race in the morning, but won in the afternoon when Hawke’s Bay could do no better than fourth.

Fresh morning conditions persuaded four of the eight provinces to carry three-man crews, and two of these crews, Hawke’s Bay and Auckland, were in front for most of the races. Seven crews had three men on board in the afternoon, but conditions had lightened a little, and the odd-man-out. Bay of Plenty, sped past Hawke’s Bay on a broad lead near the end of the race to take third place.
