Staff Travel Leave

The Canterbury University Council yesterday approved leave for the following staff to travel:—

Mr P. J. Alley (civil engineering), April 24 to May 28, to visit Peking to see his brother (Mr Rewi Alley), who is ill,, visit Australian and Chinese universities, lecture to Chinese engineers, and observe trends in soil mechanics in China. Professor H. J. Hopkins (civil engineering), May 5 to 21, to attend the Conference of Engineering Institutions of the British Commonwealth in London as president of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers and an Erskine fellowship from May 22 to July 30 to study in the United Kingdom, Canada, and United States.

Professor L. Kay (electrical engineering), June 7 to 24, for St. Dunstan’s Inter-nation Conference on Sensory Devices for the Blind in London and to visit the University of California, Kentucky Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the School for Blind Children in Miami; September 17 to October 7, N.A.T.O. symposium on the bionic model of the animal sonar system in Rome and visit London and Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. Professor D. F. Lawden (mathematics) granted an Erskine fellowship from August 14 to September 4 to attend the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow and present a paper. Professor W. B. Johnston (geography), Erskine fellowship from November 15 to February 5 to visit North America, Europe and Japan to study geography teaching, training and research, and examine departmental facilities and equipment.
