UNUSUAL DESIGN

New Church In Avonhead

A church of unusual design was opened in Withells road, Avonhead, by the Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery (the Rev. T. G. Campbell) on Sunday afternoon.

It is composed of a series of hexagons. Similar modular units can be added gradually until, finally, a circular auditorium is produced, consisting of one central hexagon surrounded by six others. The roof spans are of reinforced concrete, each cast into a single hexagonal mould at ground level, and hoisted into position on upright beams.

The congregation will sit around the pulpit, rather than facing it. Services will be of the “family” type, with provision for instruction of children, incorporated in the church service instead of in a separate Sunday school. Until the services of a fulltime minister are justified, a layman wil take these services and supervise congregational development. During this period the parish will remain attached to the parish of St Mark's, Upper Riccarton.
