Analyser Studied
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 10. The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) returned to New Zealand from the United States today not at all convinced of the efficiency of the breath-analyser for assessing the drunkenness of drivers. In San Francisco, he was able to study their use by the traffic police. “It’s used on a voluntary basis and the results weren’t at all clear cut,” he said. “Some people who had shown a high degree of drunkenness in crossexamination and clinical examination achieved the opposite with the analyser. And it was the same the other way round.” It might be useful as a guide, but he was certain it was not a complete answer, he said.
