EQUAL PAY
Decision Reserved CV.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 10. The Court of Arbitration today reserved its decision in the Metal Trades Award dispute. For the employers, Mr P.| L. Oldham acknowledged that there must be appropriate margins for skill, but submitted that widening of existing margins needed more closely defined skill qualifications. Referring to the union’s | claim for equal pay for women for equal work, Mr Oldham said the union’s reference to the United States was on a very general basis, with no evidence, particularly on the practical application of the Equal Pay Act. Mr Oldham said that Mr P. G. Allen (the union’s representative) had ignored economic considerations, and that if the claim were allowed, it would be an intolerable burden on the industry. Mr Allen said that the contesting of present job classifications was to delay wage increases. The present classifications were adequate, he claimed.
