Surf Titles Will Be Defended

The only surf life-saving club in Canterbury with a segregated membership, Central Brighton Ladies, will lie contesting the New Zealand championships for the first time when they are held at Oakura, about 10 miles from New Plymouth, on March 4, 5 and 6.

Catering only for women surfers, the club has entered for both the two main team events, the six-man rescue and resuscitation and the fourman alarm. Both titles are at present held by girls from another Christchurch club, South Brighton. The great depth in Canterbury’s women surfers is clearly illustrated in the official draws for the national championship team events, released in Christchurch yesterday by the New Zealand publicity officer (Mr L. J. Tointon). Of the 18 entries in the six-man event, seven are from Canterbury clubs. All reigning champions will be defending their titles in the main team events. In the four-man alarm, Canterbury has entered 10 teams, including two from Central Brighton, South Brighton and Waimairi. South Brighton A. holder of the coveted Nelson Shield, has drawn a tough heat in the blue riband event of the

championships the senior men’s six-man rescue and resusciation championship. It will contest the fifth heat against such strong clubs as Waikanae, Titahi Bay and Red Beach. However, its “B” team, which will also be very strong, does not face quite such strong competition. It is matched against Waihi, Fitzroy. Otiti, Arewa and two local club teams, Sumner and Waimairi B. Taylor’s Mistake, which was runner-up in the Canterbury six-man championship, has also drawn a strong heat. Its strongest competition will probably come from Lyall Bay A. Eastern United and Worser Bay. I In the senior four-man alarm, the title-holder. Eastern United, will clash with three strong Christchurch teams, Taylor’s Mistake, Sumner and Waimairi, in the fifth heat. With Maranui in the heat as well, a first-class performance will be required to reach the final.
