Belgian Govt Resigns
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) BRUSSELS, Feb. 10. The Prime Minister, Mr Pierre Harmel, decided to resign today after 12 Socialist ministers pulled out of his Coalition Cabinet.
The resignation of the Socialists followed a crisis within the Government over the nation’s health service.
The Social Christians, the other party of the coalition, favour a compromise with the doctors, who oppose free medical treatment. The Socialists have opposed the doctors’ demands for changes in Belgium’s medical system. The Socialists last night turned down a Social Christian compromise suggesting that Socialist-run hospitals charge a small fee.
Mr Harmel announced that he would present the resignation of the Government to King Baudouin, who is due to return to Brussels tomorrow from a State visit to Denmark.
